Box girder cranes are heavy-duty lifting solutions that are designed for applications requiring maximum strength, precision, and reach. Unlike traditional bridge cranes that use I-beams, box girders are fabricated from welded plate steel to form a rectangular, hollow, box-shaped structure. This design creates a significant advantage for load-bearing capacity and maintains a superior weight-to-span ratio.
Why Choose a Box Girder Crane?
The box girder design is ideal for high-capacity and long-span applications. These cranes offer increased hook height for vertical lifts, higher lifting capacities, extended bridge spans, and durability for long-term use.
The box girder design resists twisting forces and distributes stress more evenly across the crane’s structure. This allows the crane to operate greater loads with improved stability and control.
Structural Design
Box girders are constructed using steel plates, webs and flanges, welded together to form a rectangular beam. Internal diaphragms are often included to reinforce the structure, especially at joints or connection points. This configuration increases vertical strength without increasing girder height.
This design also allows for tailored adjustments in steel thickness to match specific weight or span requirements, which makes box girder cranes a flexible and cost-efficient option.
Application Areas
Box girders are frequently used in industries where precision, reliability, and heavy lifting is essential. Most common application areas include:
- Steel mills and foundries
- Shipbuilding and marine facilities
- Automotive and aerospace manufacturing
- Heavy equipment production
- Warehousing and distribution centers
- Large-scale fabrication shops
Why Engineered Systems?
Engineered Systems started fabricating box girder cranes occasionally in our Greenville, South Carolina location around 2003. We then moved our box girder production to Woodstock, Georgia in 2012. In 2015, we expanded our operations by acquiring a facility dedicated for the manufacturing of box girder cranes in Greenville, South Carolina. Initially operating box girders only out of this location, we continued to scale to meet increasing customer needs. In 2025, we expanded further by opening a second facility in Greenville, dedicated exclusively to box girder fabrication.
Contact Engineered Systems for custom-designed box girder cranes that meet your exact operational needs. With our team’s experience and knowledge, you can rely on us to provide a reliable solution for your material handling.
